Summer may not officially kick off until June 20, but with the action (and the temperatures) outdoors already surging, there can be no doubt that the Jersey Shore's liveliest season is off and running.

Join us Sunday, June 5 at Ocean Medical Center as we say "welcome home" to another glorious season of fresh air, sunshine and outdoor fun at the kickoff race of the 2016 Heart & Sole Cup.

The annual series of 5k races are a fun, family-friendly way to promote health and fitness for all ages, with benefits that will span a lifetime.

According to Jersey Shore University Medical Center cardiologist Brett Sealove, M.D., whether it's a 5k run or a walk around the block, by taking those first steps, you are helping heighten the remedy to a nationwide epidemic.

"Two thirds of the U.S. adult population are overweight or obese. Think about that... Two-thirds." says Dr. Sealove. "You hear it repeated time and time again, and in this case, it's true.  Obesity is an epidemic... But it doesn't have to be."

According to Dr. Sealove, community fitness initiatives like the Heart & Sole Cup help dispel that misconception that exercise and healthy habits have to be a chore.

"Life is about living. So, yes, enjoy it," Sealove says.  "By making healthy lifestyle choices now - eating better, getting outside, getting more exercise - you are making the choice to live happier and healthier for years to come. And what's more enjoyable than that?"
