Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure in which excess tissue is removed from the breasts, alleviating chronic discomforts that include back, neck and shoulder pain and rash or skin irritation.

For many women, the procedure can also improve posture and increase mobility.

Stephen Small, D.O., a plastic surgeon at Southern Ocean Medical Center, often recommends patients first look into conventional treatment options before scheduling breast reduction surgery.

Dr. Small advises patients to “see a musculoskeletal specialist, such as an orthopedic surgeon or chiropractor, and have physical therapy prior to undergoing breast reduction surgery.”

He adds that even with the positive results achieved by traditional methods, often times opting for breast reduction surgery proves to be an effective alternative with consistent long-term benefits.

“While conservative treatments are beneficial to reducing symptoms, they do not necessarily eliminate the true problem of excessively heavy breasts,” Dr. Small says.

He adds that the positive benefits of breast reduction surgery are usually noticed immediately following the procedure.

“Almost immediately after surgery, patients generally feel improvement from
the weight reduction,” Dr. Small says, adding that patients often find surprising benefits to the procedure that go beyond their initial expectations.

“They have a new sense of well-being, improvement in self-esteem, and the ability to move around, which are all benefits beyond what most patients expect," he adds.
